| Sunday, 26 May, 2002, 17:00 GMT 18:00 UK Hansen wins at Wentworth Victory never looked in doubt for Hansen Anders Hansen revelled in the final-round pressure at the Volvo PGA Championship as he claimed his first tour title by five strokes. Hansen went round in 70 to finish on 19 under, five shots clear of Colin Montgomerie and Eduardo Romero.
"I'm shell-shocked," Hansen told the BBC. "I was very nervous, my stomach hurt and I haven't slept. "It was the hardest round I've ever played." The Dane began the day with a five-stroke lead, but had been expected to face a charge from experienced Wentworth campaigners Montogomerie and Nick Faldo. In the event it was Hansen who held his game together best for the third day in succession, and victory was all but assured by the turn. Somebody in the chasing pack needed to produce a round of 65 or so to really challenge, but Faldo and Montgomerie could not string the birdies together. Montgomerie made seven birdies, but two bogeys kept his round to 67, which was impressive but not enough to worry the leader.
It was even more scrappy from Faldo, who made seven birdies and four birdies on his way to a 69. Spain's Carlos Rodiles went out with Hansen in the final round but made no impression on the lead with a round of 72. Only a late burst from Argentinian veteran Eduardo Romero suggested a challenge for the title, and he moved within four with an eagle on the 12th. But moments later Hansen birdied the 14th, Romero dropped a stroke up ahead, and the lead was back to an unassailable six strokes. Hansen knew that a good start was vital over Wentworth's difficult opening holes, and with two birdies and a bogey he was one up for the day by the fifth. And when he holed a massive putt on the ninth to go seven clear the result was beyond doubt. With the chasing pack faltering, the star performer of the final day, apart from Hansen, was Jarrod Moseley. The Australian started the day way back on two under but produced a magnificent 63 to equal the course record, and jump into the top eight. |
