Jones, the only player in the tournament's 23-year history to win consecutive titles, finished at 11 under par on 205 after three rounds at the Corning Country Club. She will be play the final round with Diaz, who carded a two-under 70 after sharing the second-round lead with Jean Bartholomew. Bartholomew limped to a three-over 75 that included three straight bogeys as she fell six shots off the pace with a 54-hole total of 210.
Jones, who won the event in 1996 and 1997, was also runner-up in 1999. "It wouldn't be any fun out there shooting 67 without a crowd," she said. "So it's always better with a big crowd and a loud crowd because they're into it and they're having fun." Italy's Silvia Cavalleri carded a 70 and is three strokes back on nine under, one clear of Korean rookie Jung Yeon Lee. |
