Walker second despite slow start

Jersey's James Walker has moved into second place of the 2009 Formula Renault 3.5 Championship.

The 25-year-old finished in the points in both of Saturday's races in Portimao, Portugal.

Unfortunately for Walker, his main rival Bertrand Baguette of France, now has a 29-point lead in the series with just two rounds to go.

Walker, usually strong in qualifying, found himself in 14th and on row seven, so was pleased to move into second.

"We managed to salvage quite a lot after our mistakes in qualifying." he said.

"We still have four races to go though and we go to the Nürburgring next which has always been a good track for me."

Walker finished in the points in sixth and then eighth in the two races to move from second to third in the Championship.

The World Series now enters a seven-week summer break until the penultimate round at the Nürburgring in Germany on 19 September.

Championship positions

1 Bertrand Baguette 110

2 James Walker 79

3 Jaime Alguersuari 74

4 Marcos Martinez 73
