The top British pair both fell victim to eventual winner Goran Ivanisevic on the green, green grass of home. Henman's downfall for the third time at the semi-final stage was particularly hard to take for his legion of fans. But Taylor believes Henman and Rusedski can be happy with their form in the past fortnight. And he's looking for them to take it forward, first to the US Open and then a vital Davis Cup against Ecuador in September.
"Both Tim and Greg have improved a lot technically this year, " said Taylor. "They have had some good results against some of the best players in the world. We shouldn't forget that. "They are much better players than they were a year ago and I don't think they have peaked. "Now they have to take the positives from Wimbledon and look forward to the next big event, the US Open. "This is a very important time for both players in terms of rankings.
"If they are to progress then they need to use the experience they have gained and be playing in the latter stages of the big tournaments." With the Davis Cup tie against Ecuador starting on September 21 - 12 days after the end of the US Open - British tennis enters an important time. Taylor should name his squad near the end of the first week of the Open and will then take the players to Florida for a week's preparation once the tournament is finished. "It will be very difficult against Ecuador as we know from past experiences, and we are the underdogs," said Taylor. "Not only that Tim and Greg will have to adjust to clay after playing on hard courts in the US Open.
"However we have to remain optimistic about overcoming Ecuador." Taylor also wants another Briton to follow the lead of the top two and start pushing towards the world's top 100. "We need someone in that group to join Tim and Greg," he said. "Barry Cowan had a good Wimbledon, Martin Lee is making progress while Arvind Parmar and Jamie Delgado are also around. "But we do need someone to be that benchmark and begin to put pressure on Tim and Greg." | |
