| |  Sunday, 8 July, 2001, 14:57 GMT 15:57 UK Ivanisevic vents fury at McEnroe Ivanisevic: Delight at reaching a fourth final Goran Ivanisevic was in jubilant mood after reaching his fourth Wimbledon final at the expense of Britain's Tim Henman. The big-serving Croatian now faces Australian Pat Rafter who stands in his way from picking up his first Wimbledon crown. But rather than lead with his three-day semi-final victory during the post-match conference, the player chose the opportunity to answer criticism levelled at him by former champion, and now television commentator, John McEnroe.
McEnroe said that Ivanisevic could never win Wimbledon with just one shot - his powerful serve. "McEnroe was my idol but I don't think too much of him as a person," said Ivanisevic. "To have one shot, to be in the final of Wimbledon and to have won 21 tournaments, some on clay, makes me a genius." "Nobody is good for him....who cares about him?" Ivanisevic, who becomes the first wildcard entry to reach the final, paid tribute to defeated opponent Henman. "Henman is a great player. He can win Wimbledon next year, I don't see many guys beating Tim on grass," he added.
Looking forward to Monday's final, Ivanisevic took a light-hearted approach. "I have to go to court, like I have done in all my other matches, and play my best," he added. "I'm playing a guy (Rafter) who is a great tennis player, having won two Grand Slams. He still wants to win Wimbledon, last year he came up short. "I hope it's not going to last three days. I hope we finish on Monday." | |
