| Henman has the hunger Tim Henman now has the desire to win Wimbledon Tim Henman's dramatic defeat at Wimbledon will give the Briton the perfect spur to win the title next year, according to a leading stress expert. The British number one went out in the semi-finals to eventual champion Goran Ivanisevic after leading in the latter stages of the match. The defeat raised questions about Henman's mental toughness, but Professor Cary Cooper believes it is the perfect preparation for victory next year. "I would pump money on him to win Wimbledon," said Cooper, based at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology.
"In Goran's case he had this hunger to succeed because of his background in Croatia - a hard, tough school. "I am not saying Tim didn't have drive just because he comes from a solid middle-class family. "But I think he will now have that extra hunger because of all the negative stuff that has been said about him after losing the semi-final. "It will drive him on. All he needs is time to re-build his self confidence." The semi-final was played over three days as rain repeatedly interrupted play, and Cooper claims that the delays exposed Henman's fragile self-confidence. "It was mentally exhausting," said Cooper. "As the match unfolded the pressure mounted on Tim. He is not as confident as some of the other top players and it began to affect him. "If the game had lasted only one day he might have won it. The longer it went on, however, you feared for him as he is a player who needs time to re-build his confidence." |
