Williams thunders in a 118mph serve, her fastest of the match so far, as she wins to love. Her second title moves closer. A deft drop volley from Henin saves the second break point in a thrilling rally. But Williams makes it third time lucky, and goes two games ahead. Another net cord seals victory to love for Williams on her serve in the first game of the final set. Second set Henin draws level at one set all with a sparkling backhand volley at the net on the first of two set points. First sign of cracks in the Williams armour, with Henin claiming a crucial break of serve to cheer the crowd. Underdog Henin wins her serve to love, and looks to be gaining in confidence. After a short rain delay, Williams holds serve but is having to fight for her points. Rain halts play for 15 minutes. With the pressure on at 30-30, Henin thunders in a 108mph serve to go ahead but then double-faults for deuce. She rescues a break point to stay alive. An ace shows there is little let-up in the Williams first serve, although Henin is fighting for every point. Henin goes on the offensive, troubling her opponent with some fiery forehands. The American is in imposing form, with her serve particularly strong. Henin holds serve to win first game of second set. First set Williams clinches the first set in commanding fashion.
Fans on Centre Court, already stunned by Tim Henman's earlier semi-final defeat, are subdued as Williams edges further ahead with a second break of serve. A net cord winner, and a long-looking second serve which is called good, confirm fortune is favouring the champion. The Belgian teenager forces deuce after losing the first three points on her serve, saves a fourth break point, but then double-faults to gift a fifth and Williams makes it count. Second seed Williams powers clear in the third game, winning to love. Henin wows the crowd with a blistering first service game to draw level. Williams opens with two double-faults, but recovers her composure and serves out for the first game. |
