Johnson and Palmer maintain green streak
Johnson and Palmer struggled through to the final
Johnson and Palmer struggled through to the final
Donald Johnson and Jared Palmer, from the United States, won the men's doubles title at Wimbledon on Sunday.

They beat Jiri Novak and David Rikl, of the Czech Republic, 6-4 4-6 6-3 7-6 on No1 Court.

The final was held over from Saturday after rain stopped play midway through the first set.

Fourth seeds Johnson and Parmer, who were first-round losers at Roland Garros, extended their winning streak to 9-0 on grass after their win at the Nottingham Open two weeks ago.

The duo are the first all-American pair to win the championship since Rick Leach and Jim Pugh did so in 1990.

Five titles

The pair teamed up for the first time in early March, and have won five titles in the eight tournaments they have played.

They won on their debut in Scottsdale, Arizona, on a hard court, and followed up with back-to-back clay-court victories in Barcelona and Mallorca.

However, their progress to the final on Sunday had been far from easy.

They were forced to save four match points on Palmer's serve in the quarter-finals.

Eventually they battled past Juan Balcells, of Spain, and Sjeng Schalken, of the Netherlands, in five sets.

Palmer has already won a Grand Slam men's doubles title, having taken the 1995 Australian Open with American partner Richey Reneberg.

Palmer also reached the Wimbledon final two years ago, with Paul Haarhuis of the Netherlands, losing then to the Indian pair of Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes.

Novak and Rikl were the third seeds and the first Czech pair to contest a Wimbledon final.
