Henman steps up search
Tim Henman
Henman has received many offers of coaching
Tim Henman says his main task following his disappointing semi-final exit from Wimbledon will be to find a coach.

The British number one has not had a coach since he parted company with David Felgate three months ago.

Now he thinks the time is right to find someone new to oversee his game.

"This game is hard enough without trying to do it on your own," Henman said. "I certainly want to get a coach but I'm not just going to get any old coach.

"I want to make sure I choose the right person for the job. I just have to wait and see if anyone's available."

David Felgate
Henman split with Felgate three months ago
Henman has had several offers to fill the post. Some have been official, others mentioned in the locker room and there was even a tongue-in-cheek offer from John McEnroe during Wimbledon.

But the Oxford-based player has not found anyone suitable to work with yet.

He wants someone who is prepared to travel with him on the ATP tour who is capable of taking his game on both technically and mentally.

There is work to be done on Henman's fragile forehand and his occasionally suspect second serve.

Henman had worked with Felgate since he was an aspiring teenage player and it was difficult for the pair to part company.

But Henman still believes his three months alone have been positive for him.

"It's been a good test for me, a good mental learning process. It has made me more aware about certain aspects of my game.

"If you're not getting any input you have to think it out for yourself. Every shot you hit you have to try to analyse and see what's going on.

You've got to keep raising your own standards - you've always got to deal with the generations coming up
Tim Henman
"My game has certainly come a long way. Now I have to make sure that I keep improving."

Henman acknowledged that he will need to keep developing his game if he is to stay near the top of the ATP rankings.

Although the likes of Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras and Henman's nemesis at this year's Wimbledon, Goran Ivanisevic, are nearing the end of their careers, the likes of Andy Roddick, Lleyton Hewitt and Roger Federer are only starting theirs.

"That's the challenge, isn't it?" he said. "You've always got to deal with the generations coming up.

"But you've got to keep raising your own standards. I've certainly done that. I've continued to improve my game and that's important.

"If I stay static then those types of players will overtake you."

He added that he still has a great chance of winning Wimbledon. "I'll be back for many more tries. I believe I'll win this tournament."
