Nathan Ellington's second hat-trick against Premiership opposition gave Second Division Wigan an impressive win over West Brom.

The irrepressible 23-year-old front man, who scored an FA Cup hat-trick for Bristol Rovers against Derby last season, took his tally for this campaign to eight goals.

Ellington was allowed to make it all look ridiculously easy as Albion caved in to defeat in embarrassing fashion.

Ellington hammered his first goal in the 32nd minute when he turned Matt Jackson's right-wing cross home past keeper Joe Murphy.

He doubled his tally in the 50th minute when he got round Albion's flat-footed offside-trap and flicked home Tony Dinning's through-ball.

And his third arrived with 10 minutes to go when he rose unmarked in the six-yard box to head home Gary Teale's cross from deep on the right.

The only consolation for West Brom was when Lee Hughes finally scored - in the 88th minute - two months after returning to the club from Coventry.

Wigan had hammered Megson's under-strength side - lacking a number of first team regulars - from the start and thoroughly deserved their comfortable win.

Albion's only two first-half chances came from midfielder Jason Koumas from two long-range free-kicks.

His second effort deflected off the Wigan wall and banged the bottom of John Filan's right-hand post.

But they were the only scares for Paul Jewell's men, who could have had the game wrapped up by half-time.

Jason Jarrett forced Murphy to save his long-range effort then Ellington seized on a midfield error and beat two Albion defenders before firing into the keeper's arms from a tight angle.

Teale almost found the head of the busy Neil Roberts with a right-wing cross and Ellington's fellow striker then fluffed two golden chances from 10 yards.

Roberts went on to bring a great save out of Murphy before Ellington's opener put Wigan in the driving seat.

Ellington could have had even more had he not missed with a looping shot from 10 yards early in the second period.

Teale almost set up Roberts but it was Ellington's night and his late header completed a magnificent night for Paul Jewell's Second Division stars.
