| Tuesday, 1 October, 2002, 21:44 GMT 22:44 UK Stockport 1-2 Gillingham (After extra time) Gillingham produced a spirited performance to overcome a Stockport in extra-time in their Worthington Cup second-round clash at Edgeley Park. The Gills booked their place in the next round with a wonder-goal from substitute Tommy Johnson, who hit a bullet into the left-hand corner in the 113th minute. Earlier, Stockport had deservedly taken the lead on eight minutes after some good early pressure. John Hardiker delivered a teasing ball from the left wing, which was met perfectly by striker Jon Daly, who headed home from eight yards to leave Gillingham keeper Vince Bartram with no chance. But the visitors did not spend much time licking their wounds and Guy Ipoua levelled matters with a header just 17 minutes later. Ipoua, who found a yard of space behind County's back line, leapt well to meet a Danny Spiller cross from the right and put the Gills right back in the contest. The heavens opened in the second half and County toiled to break down their determined opponents. However, their best chance to take the lead came right after the interval. But Gillingham captain Paul Smith was in the right place at the right time to head away a Dave Challinor header after the Stockport skipper had lost his marker at the back post. Stockport keeper Lee Jones produced a brilliant save to deny David Perpetuini after 72 minutes as the visitors pushed for the victory. Jones, at full stretch, was equal to a rasping left-footed drive which had looked set to put Gillingham in front. Rod Wallace should have won the game for the Gills with eight minutes remaining, but the former Bolton player fired his shot wide of the left post from close range. Luckily, it was to be the Gills' night. Stockport: Jones, Hardiker, Palmer, Challinor, Tonkin, Gibb, Briggs, Lambert, Goodwin, Beckett, Daly. Subs: Ingham, Ellison, Ross, Pemberton, Lescott. Gillingham: Bartram, Nosworthy, Ashby, Hope, Leon Johnson, Smith, Shaw, Perpetuini, Spiller, Ipoua, Wallace. Subs: Brown, Rose, Tommy Johnson, White, Crofts. Referee: M Clattenburg (Co Durham). |
