| Tuesday, 1 October, 2002, 22:02 GMT 23:02 UK Wolves pay penalty (Rotherham win 4-2 on penalties) Rotherham booked their place in the third round of the Worthington Cup after an amazing tie at Millmoor. The Millers seemed down and out when they trailed 3-1 with 11 minutes left. The match had earlier swung Wolves' way as Shaun Newton (penalty), Kenny Miller and Alex Rae saw the visitors hit back after falling behind to Andy Monkhouse's fifth-minute opener for the hosts. But Rotherham were handed a lifeline when they were awarded a penalty of their own which Mark Robins converted. Chris Swailes then forced extra-time with a dramatic equaliser four minutes from time. Two minutes into the added period Richard Barker capitalised on an error in the Wolves defence. But Rob Scott inexplicably fired past his own goalkeeper in the final minute to take the game to a penalty shoot-out. Robins missed his first effort but Newton and substitute Denis Irwin squandered theirs, which left John Mullin to bag the winner and seal Rotherham's passage into round three. Rotherham: Pollitt, Scott, Swailes, Branston, Hurst, Warne, Garner, Mullin, Monkhouse, Robins, Richard Barker. Subs: Gray, Daws, Bryan, Beech, Hoskins. Wolverhampton: Murray, Edworthy, Naylor, Lescott, Butler, Ingimarsson, Rae, Newton, Ndah, Blake, Miller. Subs: Solly, Ince, Irwin, Sturridge, Connelly. Referee: P Prosser (Gloucestershire). |
