Derby 1-2 Oldham

Iain Dowie celebrated his Nationwide manager of the month award in style as his Oldham side moved into the third round of the Worthington Cup with an extra-time win over Derby.

Clyde Wijnhard's penalty in time added on clinched the win after David Eyres had earlier cancelled out Danny Higginbotham's first-half spot kick for the Rams.

Oldham were incensed at Derby's 14th-minute penalty, awarded for a challenge on 17-year-old Izale McLeod by Clint Hill.

But they hit back three minutes later through a 25-yard drive from Eyres after good work from Lee Duxbury.

And in the fifth minute of extra-time, they were happy to accept a penalty of their own as Hill fell in the box following an Eyres corner.

Oldham still had 25 minutes to hold out after taking the lead, and they survived a number of close calls as Derby's attacking became more and more desperate.

David Miskelly saved Lewis Hunt's effort with his feet and Malcolm Christie headed wastefully over the crossbar.

But Derby were forced to finish the game with 10 men after goalkeeper Mart Poom was adjudged to have handled outside of his area late on.

Midfielder Ian Evatt took over the gloves but had little to do as Oldham were content to throw men behind the ball and defend their lead.

Derby: Poom, Riggott, Carbonari, Higginbotham, Barton, Bolder, Lee, Murray, Boertien, Christie, McLeod.

Oldham: Miskelly, Beharall, Hill, Hall, Eyre, Duxbury, Da Silva, Carss, Eyres, Corazzin, Wijnhard.

Referee: B Curson (Leicestershire)
