Bury's inspirational captain Jon Newby provided the impetus as Bolton were knocked out of the Worthington Cup.

Bolton manager Sam Allardyce's gamble in fielding a second-string side for this second round match backfired badly.

Newby personified his side's desire.

The former Liverpool striker has been the target of several bigger and richer clubs - including West Brom in the summer, but he has elected to stay at Bury.

It was Newby who fired in a cross which was bundled into his own net by Bernard Mendy under pressure from Colin Woodthorpe.

Allardyce's restructured side ensured three debuts, two of which ended in disappointment.

Chris Armstrong was substituted after 53 minutes, while Turkish midfielder Akin Bulent lasted 11 minutes longer but also left the field early - sent off for up two cautions.

Three minutes after the break Bury achieved the reward for their first-half exertions by taking the lead.

Not surprisingly it was Newby at the heart of the move, the centre-forward bursting down the right, forcing his way into the box and firing in a low cross which ended up in the net.

Mendy looked sheepish and it was Newby rather than Woodthorpe who accepted the congratulations of his team-mates.

Another penetrating run by Newby created more havoc in the Bolton defence but when he found Terry Dunfield the Canadian fired too high.

Kevin Nolan came off the bench for Bolton and almost had an immediate impact forcing Glynn Garner into a sprawling stop.

Nolan and Dean Holdsworth then interchanged passes twice to split open Bury's defence but Nolan stumbled at the crucial moment and Garner was able to gather.

The home side piled on the pressure in six minutes of injury time, but Chris Billy nearly added a second for Bury on the break, shooting over from near the penalty spot.
