England captain Tony Greig's pronouncement before the 1976 series that he intended to make the West Indies "grovel" had a big effect - but not in the way he intended.

With the apartheid issue at the forefront of 1970s politics, the West Indians were clearly fired up to hear South African-born Greig use the word - and the tourists dominated the English summer.

Clive Lloyd's side romped to a 3-0 victory in the one-day series, and after drawing the first two Tests, won the last three.

A young Viv Richards made 232 in the first Test and 291 in the final Test - while opener Gordon Greenidge hit three centuries in successive innings.

The pace attack was spearheaded by Andy Roberts, who took 6-37 to win the Old Trafford Test, and Michael Holding who grabbed 8-92 and 6-57 at The Oval.
