England must have thought they had struck a blow when Malcolm Marshall broke his left thumb while fielding in the third Test at Headingley.

But the Windies paceman came out to bat one-handed at number 11, hung around to help Larry Gomes to reach his century and even swiped a four through the slips.

With his thumb in plaster, "one-armed bandit" Marshall ran through England's second innings, taking 7-53 to set up an eight-wicket series-clinching win.

There was no let-up in the fourth Test at Old Trafford as Gordon Greenidge smashed 223 and the Windies won by an innings.

Marshall's Hampshire team-mate Paul Terry also batted one-handed after Winston Davis broke his forearm.

The tourists' dominance continued at The Oval, where a 172-run victory completed a 5-0 "blackwash" - although Ian Botham claimed his 300th Test wicket.
