Danny Crates - retirement decision

Danny Crates and son Henry

I think at the back of my mind I knew 2012 would be a Games too far but I never ruled it out.

If Beijing had gone well, I probably would have retired then but when it didn't, I wanted one more year to put it behind me and show everyone that I still had what it takes to be a top-class athlete.

I struggled through the winter with the leftovers of the Beijing injuries but in March and April I was once again running well and getting in shape.

However, then I suffered a minor tear in my hamstring four weeks before the BT Paralympic World Cup in Manchester. Because it was an international and important for me to come back for, I probably returned a week early.

However, I felt good during the race and I was ready to pounce with 600m to go but then I tore my hamstring.

I had to sit on the sidelines watching the race unfold without me. It was another really tough moment for me and I think it was probably then that I realised maybe I should retire.
