Danny Crates - early days

Danny Crates early in his career

I was an athlete up to the age of about 14 but then switched my allegiance to rugby where I represented Essex.

Then I travelled to Australia and had the accident where I lost my arm.

When I came back, I went back playing rugby but I was approached and asked if I would be interested in taking up athletics again.

About two years later I went along and met some athletes who had competed in Atlanta and that sent me on the Paralympic path.

Although I was an 800 and 1500m runner in my younger days, I started off my Paralympic career in the 400m.

My first big competition was the 1998 World Championships. Even though I came last, I knew that if I could put in more training then I could potentially go a lot further.
