Georg Totschnig launched himself off the front of a 10-man breakaway to win the 220.5km stage.

A fresh-looking Jan Ullrich stunned a weary Lance Armstrong with a breakaway two kilometres from the finish of the gruelling 197.5 km 13th stage from Toulouse to Ax-3 Domaines in 2003. But it was Spaniard Carlos Sastre who recorded a memorable victory on the day in question.

I cycled across the Pyrenees last year from the Mediterranean t the Atlantic. We met Lance Armstrong on the top of the Port de Pallheres (2001m up). He was on training ride a week prior to last year's Tour. We shook hands and took some excellent photos. I would recommend the trip if you have ten days to spare with some strong legs and a big heart.

Ah yes, this is always my favorite stage on the Tour route - the one where the sprinters finally get a taste of flat terrain after surviving climb after climb. And then they see the Port de Pallheres in the background, and they all think "Aw, geez." Such fun.

We stayed on municipal campsites around the Alpine stages of the tour 2 years ago and had no problem getting in even late in the day. The standard of the sites was very impressive. I had had reservations about how they would be but was convinced by my riding partner that all would be well and it was. Having said that, we have booked a house in the Pyrenees for this years edition! Enjoy!
