Sheff Utd 4-1 Wycombe

Michael Boulding scored on his full Blades debut as Neil Warnock's side brushed aside Wycombe to reach the third round of the Worthington Cup.

Warnock said earlier this season that he is sure a First Division side will win this competition in the next couple of years.

And goals from Boulding, on loan from Aston Villa, Nick Montgomery and a brace from Michael Brown ensured it could still be United this season.

A miserable night for Wycombe was completed by the 74th-minute dismissal of goalkeeper Martin Taylor.

And without a recognised keeper on the bench, midfielder Steve Brown was forced to play in goal for the last 15 minutes.

. United created two good chances in the opening 10 minutes as Wycombe struggled to contain wave after wave of home attacks.

And in the 14th minute Boulding drilled home a low left-foot shot from the edge of the box.

United continued to dominate after taking the lead, with Brown in particular dominating in the centre of the park.

Lawrie Sanchez's side could have snatched a surprise equaliser five minutes before the break, but Andy Thomson directed his header wide of the target after losing his marker.

And the visitors were made to pay for that miss when United doubled their lead three minutes after the interval.

Boulding played in Brown, who slipped the ball past Taylor.

Sanchez's response was a bold triple-substitution, but any hopes of an unlikely comeback were finally extinguished by Taylor's dismissal for deliberate handball outside the box.

Montgomery and Brown made their advantage count with two goals in quick succession.

But Wycombe did score a last-minute consolation - Paul McCarthy heading in Michael Simpson's free-kick.

Sheff Utd: Kenny, Doane, Murphy, Page, Ullathorne, McGovern, Brown, Jagielka, Tonge, Allison, Boulding. Subs: McCall, Ten Heuvel, Montgomery, Ndlovu, Smith.

Wycombe: Taylor, Thomson, McCarthy, Johnson, Senda, Currie, Roberts, Simpson, Vinnicombe, Faulconbridge, Bulman. Subs: Devine, Harris, Rammell, Talia, Brown.

Referee: M Pike (Cumbria).
