Always a dependable bowler at first-class level, Drakes is enjoying something of a renaissance after seven years in the international wilderness. He first donned a West Indies shirt in 1995 when he played in five one-day internationals against Australia.
But his decision to play domestic cricket in South Africa and in English county cricket, where he has turned out for Nottinghamshire, Sussex and Warwickshire, saw him ruled ineligible for international cricket.
For much of that time the Caribbean authorities ignored a bowler who could have brought stability, especially after the retirement of greats Courtney Walsh and Curtly Ambrose.
However, an easing in the regulations saw Drakes return to Barbados, where he was instrumental in his island's one-day Red Stripe Bowl title win in 2002.
He finally made his Test debut at the age of 33, against Bangladesh last year.
But it is his dependable one-day form that has seen him kept in the five-day side for their match with Australia.
