Barbara Myers PROGRAMME DETAILS Thursday 18 March 2004 Arthritis Aching joints and creaking bones are typical symptoms of arthritis. Perhaps for this reason, it’s often thought of as an old person’s disease. But it’s a condition that affects all ages. Toddlers suffer from arthritis-induced early morning stiffness. Teenagers may have to wear splints. Arthritis and age Whatever your age, living with arthritis is a tricky business. It often helps to have the condition diagnosed, but the label can be difficult to live with. Many young sufferers say it makes them feel unattractive. Aching joints can make physical contact painful. Friends and relatives may find it hard to sympathise when one day you’re fine, the next you’re unable to get out of bed. Treatment Drug therapies have improved dramatically in the last few years. Young people in particular are more likely to make a full recovery. It seems they can tolerate higher doses relative to their body mass. But finding the right treatment can be a long and uncomfortable process. Getting a diagnosis can be far from straightforward. There are hundreds of different types of arthritis. Many of the drug treatments have side effects and each individual reacts differently.
