 | | | | | "There is no substitute for one-to-one advice from a top medical expert and that's what we offer our callers and emailers. But for each person who calls to ask for help, someone else phones in to pass on a tip or a suggestion - it's a great programme to present."

In the first of a new series of the medical phone-in, Check Up, Barbara Myers will be inviting listeners to call about their problems with blocked noses and painful sinuses. Her guest will be Mr David Roberts, a consultant ear, nose and throat surgeon, based in London.
Sinusitis Many people in the UK suffer regularly with sinusitis, which gives a throbbing pain in the forehead and cheeks. The sinuses are hollow air-filled spaces in the skull bones and they are connected to the nose. They can become inflamed when we are infected with a cold virus. Call Check Up if you want to know about the best treatments, and when surgery to drain the sinuses might be of help.
Rhinitis Rhinitis is another common nasal complaint, with the symptoms of congestion, sneezing, runny or itchy nose. David Roberts will be answering questions about the difference between the allergic and chronic forms, and about why rhinitis is sometimes confused with sinusitis.
Polyps Some people have a stuffy nose because they have growths on the lining of the nose. These growths – or polyps – obstruct the airways. The treatment is usually surgery.
