Sam and Oren’s Great Adventure by Aidan Hall
Read by Ryan Whittle from the BBC Radio Drama Company.
The house was quiet. The cat was curled up in front of the fire, and Sam was fast asleep. That morning, Sam had been hit in the face by a football, and his front tooth was now wrapped up under his pillow. The clock struck twelve. A door magically appeared on Sam's bedroom wall and a blue light filled the room. Just then, a pain in Sam's gum made him wake up. He opened his eyes and stared straight into the eyes of Oren, his tooth fairy.
There was an explosion of light. Oren fell on the floor with a thud. Sam got out of bed and gently picked him up. Oren's left wing was broken. Oren sadly explained that if he didn't get Sam's tooth back to his home before dawn he would die. Sam wanted to help. If Oren couldn't fly then Sam would carry him. He put Oren in a sock, and put the tooth in his pyjama pocket. He tip-toed downstairs, and put his wellies on. Sam unlocked the door and stepped out into the darkness.
Their journey went on through the night. They walked over steep hills, and paddled across cold streams, following the North Star to the Enchanted Forest. For a while, Oren's blue glow helped to light the way. When they reached the trees, Oren was very weak, and his light had gone out. The leaves of the trees hid the North Star and Sam was now in total darkness. He asked Oren for help but there was no reply. Sam was cold and very scared.
Suddenly, the trees started to move, and branches stretched out to grab them. Sam pulled the branches off and ran. He ran so fast that he tripped and fell down, landing right in front of a giant water scorpion. As it lifted its tail to sting him, the ground under Sam's feet collapsed and Sam slid through a maze of tunnels deep into the ground. He landed in the middle of a huge web and couldn't get out. He held Oren close to his chest.
Seconds later, Sam felt something crawling on him, inside his clothes and in his hair. He was terrified, and shouted Oren's name as loudly as he could. A large black shape moved towards him. A massive pair of fangs were only inches away from his face. Sam looked away, and screamed.
Suddenly, there was a bright flash, and thousands of spiders were turned to stone. A group of Oren's friends had come to save them. The web disappeared and they carried Sam and Oren to their Tooth Fairy kingdom. They put Oren on the ground with the tooth, just as the sun appeared in the sky. Sam began to cry. He thought he was too late.
The next morning, Sam woke up in his bed. Was it just a dream? He looked under his pillow, and found a pound coin, and a small note which said, "Thank you. Love from Oren."
