| | What sort of music do you play? We play an eclectic selection of grooves from rare and classic funk 45's to quirky breaks, Latin beat and indie dance. At Soft you could easily hear Mr Scruff, kool and the gang, Skeewiff and Brazilian drum n bass all in the space of a few hours. What ever we play, it's got to be funky. Hammond organs and booty shaking breaks are the order of the day. Don't come down expecting to hear nosebleed Scandinavian techno coz you'll only be disappointed!
What type of crowd do you get in? We get a really friendly crowd in, we get a lot of people who work in the arts because of our connection with Folly gallery, we also get a lot of students during term time who are looking for something a bit different. I always set out for the club to be a safe haven from the leary, aggressive, corporate cattle markets that seem to have become so prevelant in recent years (hence the name). People often tell me it's the only place in town where they feel safe and relaxed, which gives me a real buzz. It's a small club and there's a real sense of community about it, but it's in no way cliquey or exclusive. All our regulars seem to be funky, laid back and culturally broad-minded. They come to have fun, listen to great tunes and get their groove on.
What do you drink on the job? There are drinks promos on spirits and pints btw 10-11pm, but I usually take advantage of the club being directly under a posh hotel and order down a nice chilled bottle of Beaujolais from the hotel kitchens!
Do you have a dress code? We don't have a dress code as such, but if you turn up in Rockport's and a tracky you're probably not going to get in. It's really more about attitude though, good ones get in, bad ones don't.
What pre soft bars would you recommend? The water witch along the Canal. They have an excellent selection of international beers and wines, and it's chilled and friendly, although it can get a bit pricey if your experimenting with one of their exotic imported lagers. Great in summer as there's loads of tables to sit out by the canal. Also Merchants, it's one of Lancaster's better pubs and it's directly across from the Crypt.
How do you wind down after the gig/or do you carry on partying? We're an intimate (tiny) club, only 100 capacity, so it doesn't take long to get to know people in there. There are always house parties afterwards, usually I'll go back to friends, but sometimes if I've got a big weekend ahead of me I'll do the sensible thing and go home for a nice cup of coco and put my feet up (yeah right!). send in your clubbing news to: | |
