Artist: Jurgen Driessen Title: "Passion" Label: Mutekki Format: 12" Cat: mutekki no.11 Style: Minimal Techno Release Date: Out Now
Jurgen Driessen is a formidable producer in many justified rights. He was the sound genius behind Oliver Klein and Marc Et Claude as well as one of the industry's contributors that has co-written within projects such as 'Exit EEE', 'Acrid Abeyance', 'Assign' and Unknown Structure's 'Music On The Brain' which have been released on renowned labels such as Harthouse, Finger Lickin' and Positiva, not to forget the fact that he's one half of the Mutekki label.
A previous huge hit with leading progressive house DJs was 'Help Me' which was released last year to much acclaim, and has been licensed in many countries globally, I think that now you're getting the idea of just what this man is all about!
'Passion' is a pure blend of tribal progressive house and some seventies roots amongst other comparative influences. The beat is there before you know it amongst a 'divas to the dancefloor please' (Junior Vasquez - Future Sound Of New York - MOS) stylised tom riff layered with well chosen offbeat percussion and airplanes taking off ?! A groovy walking bassline surges along with swirling rope noises to introduce new layers and breaks. There's a 'Mark Summer' (Magic Summer EP - famous for it's borrowed Magic Roundabout sample) simulated female vocal in the background signalling the lead up towards the first big explosion of a breakdown.
When the tune breaks, we hear a voice speaking of 'desire' and 70's flanged guitar chords chug away in unison until everything is stripped away and only the guitar loop remains.
Swirling winds begin to build behind the strumming before an almighty kick off back into tribal progressive madness that slowly strips itself back to bare bones for the finale. Jurgen Driessen knows how to construct good music, well thought out sounds that would seem out of place anywhere else and attention to detail when it comes to delays and spot effects that don't drown anything else out.
On the engineering side, it's been engineered to sound crisp and hard without being too overdone. It'll slip in and out of the mix very nicely indeed, no worries about fiddling with knobs to get the track in unnoticed and you can always layer it onto other tracks without too much of a "drown out factor". Get your skates on and get a copy whilst you can, it'll fill the floors!
A1: 'Passion' B1: 'Passion' - Non Vocal Mix
