 | | | Worldrenowned DJ and producer, Pathaan brings global harmony a step closer with a fresh and inspirational mix on his Stoned Asia label. Pathaan's search for music which not only reflected his Pakistani heritage but an urban English upbringing, has unearthed some of the finest Asian music around.
His acid-jazz roots have added the contemporary touch to classic themes, whilst residencies have seen legendary guest DJs including, Norman Jay OBE, Dimitri and Howie B. However once David Bowie heard the pan-Asian fusion at one of Pathaan's residencies, he snapped him up to provide support on one of his tours.
He's even taken the sound of Stoned Asia to clubbing with a stage at the Gatecrasher Summer Sound System in 2002. With Asian music, particularly Pakistani, making the cross over to mainstream, the question is whether it will suffer from the mass commercialisation that has affected the rest of pop culture in the UK?
Pathaan's take on this is to provide an intellectual symmetry between east and west - listening to World Peace illustrates this to perfection. The richness of the Asian culture is apparent in World Peaces with lush orchestral soundscapes lovingly blended together, sinking you back into simpler and laid back moods.
The thirteen track compilation doesn't just sit on the chill-out shelf though - there are tougher dance floor tracks keeping you hooked till the end. Pathaan's perfection in piecing together this slice of global harmony is evident throughout; he even reworked the tracks several times over to present the mix possible.
The mix contains some exclusive and hard to find tracks. Global dance is the key which opens up our future - fresh and invigorating. Watch out as Pathaan might be visiting Lancashire very soon.
