This is a journey around some of the fascinating historical sites on the coast of Britain as chosen by archaeologist and 'Coast' presenter Mark Horton. In this year of the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar, HMS 'Victory' in Portsmouth dockyard was naturally the first site to be chosen. The sole remaining 'survivor' of the battle which was to end Napoleon's dreams of world empire and herald the rise of the British Empire.
Mark Horton writes:
'These are twelve of my favourite coastal sights, each of which tells a vivid or unusual story about Britain's history. I hope that this selection will encourage others to discover the interesting parts of Britain's coast near their own locality, to research its history, and to help preserve our coastal heritage for posterity.'
