Impact of the oil industry and the closure of Linwood car factory
Description
High oil prices and the strength of the British pound made products expensive to make and export. The Scottish car industry struggled to compete with foreign manufacturers and the Linwood factory finally closed in 1981.
Classroom Ideas
Conduct a case study of the Linwood car plant or another major industrial employer of the time. Students should look into how globalisation, international economics and changes in government intervention forced industries to change or close.
