In the 50s the post-war boom continued, and Scotland’s traditional industries still offered mass employment. This contributed to growing national prosperity.

Living standards were improving and people made the most of their leisure time. Dancing and the cinema were the main social activities.

Classroom Ideas

The clip can be used when introducing the effects of industrial growth and prosperity. Look at factors which led to improvements in people’s living conditions, dividing them into those that resulted from increased personal wealth, government intervention, changing social conditions and technological change. How similar or different were changes experienced by men and women? Conduct a comparison of leisure activities across different periods.
