Issues facing Scotland’s car industry in the 1960s

Description

The Linwood car factory near Glasgow was only an assembly plant and it was reliant on the supply chain from component factories in England. Transport costs lead to management paying less in Scotland than for equivalent jobs in England. The result was poor industrial relations and strikes.

Classroom Ideas

Discuss the challenges facing Scotland’s car industry in the 1960s, including social, economic, political and global factors. The clip could lead to a wider discussion on trade unions and industrial relations during the 60s and 70s.
