Scottish shipbuilders stage a ‘work-in’

Description

The Conservative Prime Minister, Edward Heath withdrew financial support for Scotland’s failing traditional industries. When the Upper Clyde shipyards faced closure in 1971, instead of going on strike, trade union leaders organised a ‘work in’. This campaign led to a government U-turn that resulted in thousands of jobs being saved.

Classroom Ideas

Lead a more detailed study of the industrial disputes at Clyde shipyards. The class could hold a wider discussion on trade unions and their methods.
