Hillman Imp
Description
The compact, rear-engined Hillman Imp made by the Rootes Group failed to compete successfully with its rival Mini. A combination of poor sales, supply problems and industrial disputes caused Rootes to sell the Linwood factory near Glasgow to Chrysler in 1967.
Classroom Ideas
The Hillman Imp’s failure could form the basis of projects on the history of branding, advertising, publicity and marketing. Students could explore the social issues linked to the Imp’s failure and the Mini’s popularity.
