The textile industry in the Scottish Borders
Description
Nearly one third of the Borders’ labour force was employed in the textile industry in the 1940s. Selkirk and Galashiels specialised in tweeds and tartans, and Hawick was famed for its luxury knitted items.
Classroom Ideas
Introduce the textile industry in the Scottish Borders. Take one town as a case study and produce a diagram of concentric rings showing how different trades or workers related to the textile industry: The more directly related someone is, the closer they should be to the centre. Challenge students to find examples that have no relation to textiles.
