Description
Politicians have used North Sea tax revenues to finance Britain’s spending. In the 1970s, the industry created jobs in the North East of Scotland while employment also grew elsewhere. Construction jobs were created both onshore and offshore.
Classroom Ideas
Look in more detail about economic conditions in Scotland before and after the introduction of the North Sea Oil industry. Students could create two lists, noting conditions that changed and similarities between the two periods. Where change occurred, discuss if this was a direct result of the oil industry or if other factors were involved. The class could divide Scotland into different regions, with different groups assessing how the impact of the industry differed across the nation.
