Being able to use the past tense correctly is very important when you learn a language. It enables you to speak, write and read about past events and to understand when people talk about the past.

Making negative statements

Sometimes you may want to say that you – or someone else – didn't do something. How do you form the negative?

1. Add ddim after the verb:

  • Es i... - I went
  • Es i ddim... - I didn't go

2. Words beginning in t, c and p - aspirate mutation + ddim:

  • Canais i... – I sang
  • Chanais i ddim... – I didn't sing

3. Words beginning in d, g, b, m, ll, rhsoft mutation + ddim:

  • Gwelais i ffilm dda yn y sinema. – I saw a good film at the cinema.
  • Welais i ddim ffilm dda yn y sinema. – I didn't see a good film at the cinema.
