Writing about the past – WJECOther people's experiences

Being able to use the past tense correctly is very important when you learn a language. It enables you to speak, write and read about past events and to understand when people talk about the past.

Other people's experiences

Rhod Gilbert, the comedian, loves to try different jobs on his TV programme, Rhod Gilbert's Work Experience. Listen to him talking about his modelling job. As he is talking about his own experiences he uses the -ais forms (I... in the past tense).

Rhod uses the following forms:

WelshEnglish
Gweithiais iI worked
Teithiais iI travelled
Siaradais i âI spoke to
Cerddais iI walked
Teimlais iI felt
Gwisgais iI wore
WelshGweithiais i

WelshTeithiais i
EnglishI travelled
WelshSiaradais i â
EnglishI spoke to
WelshCerddais i
EnglishI walked
WelshTeimlais i
EnglishI felt
WelshGwisgais i
EnglishI wore

Question

Imagine that you have to write a report about Rhod's modelling job. How would you write about what he did?

Change these verbs to write about what he did.

  1. Gweithiais i
  2. Teithiais i
  3. Siaradais i â
  4. Cerddais i
  5. Teimlais i
  6. Gwisgais i

If you want to say that another person did something in the past, therefore, you usually add -odd to the verb, eg:

  • Cerddodd Rhod.
  • Cerddodd o/e.
  • Bwytodd Ann.
  • Bwytodd hi.

Listening exercise

Listen to Wynne Evans, the Welsh tenor, talking about learning Welsh. Again, as he is talking about himself, he uses the –ais ending.

Question

Now, write about Wynne - say that he did these things.
