Knowledge building

The BBC plays a unique role in building knowledge, and we need to build on this by:

  • Bringing subjects to people that they didn't expect to like and by entertaining them while stretching the horizons of their knowledge. Knowledge building programming is a hugely important part of our television and radio networks.
  • Audience research carried out for the project has shown that we must do more to reach beyond our heartland audiences. Audiences expect more programming that is relevant to their lives and that helps them understand the world around them. They also want the BBC to be more up-to-date and topical and to broaden its approach by using different tones of voice.
  • Audiences also want their knowledge delivered in different ways. We need to make our huge range of content available on multiple platforms, on demand and on the go, and we must mine the treasure trove of the BBC's archive. We will have to make all this knowledge findable and navigable and our audiences will play a vital role in creating and shaping it.
  • In this way, we could truly revolutionise the range and the impact of our programmes and make the BBC a unique, global, educational and cultural institution in the converged world.
