Journalism

News24BBC Journalism is hugely valued by the public and Journalism is still the cornerstone of the BBC. BBC network and national/regional/local News are the two most important genres to audiences* and 95% of the audience consumes some news from the BBC every month.

However, Journalism is currently undergoing a revolution. Weekly reach of linear TV News is declining. Current Affairs TV viewing is falling while new media consumption is increasing (eg, 17 million hours per month of BBC radio consumed via the Radio Player; over half of the population has listened to radio via a digital platform).

Audiences increasingly want news at a time and in a place that is convenient for them. BBC News has a less regular relationship with some groups - the young, those in digital homes and more downmarket audiences.

Moreover, all audience groups recognise that over the next five years the BBC 's 24/7 services ( BBC News 24, BBC Five Live, the BBC News website, and BBC News services delivered to handheld devices such as mobile phones and PDAs;) will have become as important to the BBC News brand, as the Ten O'Clock News, Today, Newsnight and Panorama.
