Entertainment

Graham NortonPeople want to be entertained by TV and radio. And our audiences increasingly want shows that are light, fresh and surprising and reflect their lives and values.

  • BBC TV isn't seen as the best for entertainment among all audience groups.
  • And there is little BBC new media entertainment or marketing aimed at these new audiences
  • But whilst other genres may make viewers respect the BBC more, hit Entertainment makes viewers love it
  • We must continue to back a contemporary tone and feel for TV entertainment and embrace the young mainstream audience, along with our heartland and traditional audiences.

Recommendations

  • Our new commissions should truly reflect changing audience needs
  • More imaginative scheduling would increase our presence and impact
  • Ensuring the tone of our TV channels is inclusive and modern, and better marketing, would help us reach missing audiences
  • Exploiting new technologies and platforms by commissioning new media entertainment pilots would enable us to target the mainstream and young audiences
  • Investing in off-air pilots would enable us to test and launch new ideas and nurture future talent

“When I switch on the telly at the end of a long day I just want some light entertainment”

“Entertainment is a vital part of the BBC's mission” (BBC White Paper)
