DESCRIPTION: Yorkshire & Humber
From former coalfields to the remnants of the east coast fishing fleet, the Yorkshire and Humber region is affected deeply by decisions made in Europe. Its 3.75 million voters have seen money flow in from Brussels to regenerate deprived urban communities. But in a constituency which is also home to Dales sheep farmers and North Sea fishermen, they have heard cries of anguish over quotas and subsidies. It is no surprise that in a region so economically and socially diverse, the two main parties won equal numbers of seats in the last European elections of 1999. This seat is taking part in the all postal ballot experiment, to help increase turnout. And due to EU enlargement it will be losing one MEP, making its total six.
