RUBY: This is my school in the village of Turís, and today I'm going home with my friend Angela.
That backpack I'm wearing is called 'una mochila'.
I need it because I have to take all my books to and from school every day in it.
It weighs a lot: 'pesa mucho.'
They don't have lollipop people here, instead the local police help us to cross the road.
ANGELA: Mira esta es mi calle y esta es mi casa.
RUBY: Tu casa es muy bonita.
ANGELA: ¿Entramos?
RUBY: Vale.
ANGELA: Hola mamá.
ANGELA'S MUM: Hola.
RUBY: Hola, Yolanda.
ANGELA'S MUM: Hola, Ruby.
ANGELA: ¿Podemos jugar?
ANGELA'S MUM: No, teneís que hacer los deberes.
RUBY: We always have lots of homework. They call it 'los deberes'.
ANGELA: ¿Vamos a jugar?
RUBY: Vale. Venga.
Can you guess what game we're playing?
Cierra los ojos y esconde las orejas.
ANGELA: Uno, dos…
RUBY: Mm ¿Dónde me voy a esconder?
¿Detrás de la tele? No, no puedo.
¿En el armario? Tampoco puedo.
ANGELA: 14, 15
RUBY: ¿Detrás del sofá? No.
Ah ¡Ya lo sé! Arriba, en el dormitorio.
ANGELA: 18, 19, 20, ¡Voy!
Mmm ¿Dónde estará Rubí?
Mmm ¿En el armario? Mmm no.
¿Detrás del sofá? Mmm no.
¿Debajo de la mesa? No.
¿Está arriba?
¡No está en el cuarto de baño!
¡No está en la cocina!
Mmm. ¿Está debajo de la cama? No.
¡Ahí está! Te encontré.
We take a look around Angela's house when she and a friend return home after school.
First they have to do their homework and mention the subjects they study.
Then they mention the rooms in the house while playing hide and seek and use lots of prepositions of place.
This clip is from the BBC series, Being Spanish.
Teacher Notes
- This clip could be used in a pair speaking activity.
- Pupils could be given 2 battleships grids with 3 Spanish names on the left (1 per row) and about 7 locations along the top in each column ('en la cocina', detrás del sofá).
- In secret, pupils can 'hide' each person in one of the 7 locations by putting a cross in the correct box on the table.
- They will then take it in turns to find where they have hidden each person by saying phrases like: ' Carlos está en la cocina'.
- They will mark hits or misses on the second table on their sheet. The aim is to be the first to find all 3 people.
