ALL: ¡Felicidades! Hola, ¿cómo estás?
LLORENS: Hola chicos.
MAURO: ¿Cuántos años tienes?
RUBY: We've all come to celebrate my friend, Llorens's seventh birthday.
Parece, parece un…

Es una bola del mundo.
RUBY: Llorens, son pinceles.
ALL: Un libro. Un cuento.
RUBY: ¡Qué chulo!
LLORENS: Y mira para separarlo.
CARLA: Pero ahora no te lo leas.
RUBY: Meanwhile Llorens's mum is getting ready to cook Valencia’s most famous dish: la paella.
RUBY: While the paella is cooking, let's meet Llorens's family: 'su familia'.

Sobran cinco platos.
RUBY: The tasty crispy bits at the bottom, are reserved for the grown-ups. It's so not fair.
LLORENS'S GRANDMOTHER: Está buenísima.
LLORENS'S DAD: Feliz cumpleaños.
ANGELA: Me encantan las cerezas.
MAURO: ¡Qué delicioso!

LLORENS: Un poquito, un poquito de esto.
ANGELA: Yo quiero esta, yo quiero uno.
MAURO: Está deliciosa ¿no?
RUBY: And after a big lunch, what all the grown-ups like to enjoy is a Spanish afternoon nap: 'una siesta'. But not for long.
BOTH: ¡Despiértate!
LLORENS'S DAD: No. No me dejáis dormir mi siesta.
Llorens is celebrating his birthday with friends and family.
As he receives gifts from his friends, his mother is preparing the food for the party - paella. She shows all the ingredients for the dish and how she makes it.
We are then introduced to members of Llorens's big family.
The family sit down and enjoy the delicious dish. After such a big meal the adults go for a sleep, leaving the kids to play a trick on them.
This clip is from the BBC series, Being Spanish.
Teacher Notes
- This could be used as the basis for a discussion about the differences between celebrating a birthday in Spain and the UK, possibly through the type of food items for a birthday party.
- Pupils could be encouraged to list the main differences and then write a description (in English) of how they celebrated their last birthday.
- Pupils could hold cards with family members written in Spanish and raise them when each member appears on screen, saying for example: 'Es la madre'.
