| Thursday, 30 May, 2002, 11:05 GMT 12:05 UK Madden called up for SA Martyn Madden has had a lot of support in Wales Llanelli prop Martyn Madden has been included in the Wales squad for the trip to South Africa as a replacement for injured Chris Anthony. Newport prop Anthony suffered a shoulder injury in training for the match against the Barbarians and has not recovered to make the trip. Instead, the uncapped 28-year-old Llanelli has received the call from Wales coach Steve Hansen to join the 26-man party which leaves for South Africa on Friday. It has been a rollercoaster few weeks for Cardiff-born Madden, whose failure to make the original squad was the subject of much debate on the BBC's Scrum V website.
"I've been knocking on the door for a long time, so now my chance has come I've got to take it," Madden said. "It's going to be a hard task. I think losing to the Barbarians was a huge blow to Wales - they would have liked to go into the South Africans Tests with a win. "I know this week they will be working hard to do their best for their country." Madden received a 'phone call from Wales coach Steve Hansen on Wednesday night, soon after Wales had let slip a 25-0 half-time lead against the Barbarians to lose 40-25. The Scarlets prop, who earned the respect of the Leicester pack during three titanic Heineken Cup clashes this season, was forced to cancel a holiday to see his parents in Jamaica in order to go on tour. Madden and his front-row colleagues are sure to have their scrummaging technique, strength and heart tested to the full in the two-Test series. Springboks coach Rudy Straeuli has paid special attention to the scrummage in a closed training camp, looking to create a "superscrum" that can rival any pack in the world. Straeuli has subjected his side to intense scrumming sessions and more are to follow as the Springboks prepare for the first Test against Wales in Bloemfontein on 8 June. Wales are still sweating on the fitness of Newport centre Andy Marinos, who suffered a sprained ankle against the Barbarians. He is hoping to declare himself available before the squad depart. Tour itinerary: 15 June: Second Test at Newlands, Cape Town (kick-off 1605 BST). Wales squad: Backs: K Morgan (Swansea), R Williams (Cardiff), J Storey (Neath), M Taylor (Swansea), J Robinson (Cardiff), A Marinos (Newport), T Shanklin (Saracens), C Morgan (Cardiff), S Jones (Llanelli), N Jenkins (Cardiff), D Peel (Llanelli), R Powell (Cardiff).
