Montgomery offered second chance
Percy Montgomery
Percy Montgomery has signed a contract with Newport
Springbok outcast Percy Montgomery has been handed a way back into the South Africa side by coach Rudolf Straeuli - but only if the player tears up his contract with Welsh club Newport.

Straeuli said on Monday that he would welcome South Africa's second-highest Test points scorer back into an injury-hit Springbok fold, although the player would have to make the first approach.

"If Percy wants to play for South Africa and decides to come back he would be considered like every other player," Straeuli said.

Under South African Rugby Football Union rules, players based abroad are not eligible for the Springboks.

Montgomery's name has cropped up following a spate of injuries to South African fullbacks.

Do you think I have to go to him?

Ricardo Loubscher, who made his debut in last Saturday's 34-19 win over Wales in Bloemfontein, has a rib injury and is doubtful for Saturday's second Test in Cape Town.

Second-choice fullback Conrad Jantjes was injured in a training session with his provincial side the Cats last week and is likely to be out for a month.

It means the Springboks may have to go into the second Test without a recognised fullback.

"I spoke to Monty a few weeks ago but I haven't spoken to him since," Straeuli said, making it clear that any reconciliation would need the the player to make the first move.

"Do you think I have to go to him? If he is prepared to play under SA Rugby then we have to consider him like we would consider a player like Braam van Straaten (currently with Leeds) if he said he wants to come back.

"There's a lot of options in the squad we have here and they all want to play for South Africa."

Flanker Corne Krige and centre De Wet Barry, who both missed the first Test through injury, trained on Monday and should be available for selection when Straeuli names his team on Wednesday.
