| Monday, 20 May, 2002, 14:56 GMT 15:56 UK Martin eyes Paul record Martin's run started against Halifax last month London Broncos marksman Tony Martin has moved within sight of Henry Paul's world record for consecutive successful goal kicks. The former Melbourne Storm centre took his tally to 26 with seven out of seven in the Broncos' 42-18 win at Salford on Sunday. Martin needs nine more to equal the mark of Paul, who posted a world record 35 for the Bradford Bulls last season before his switch to rugby union with Gloucester. Martin, whose last miss was in the Broncos' 46-18 win over Halifax last month, will aim to continue the streak against Leeds Rhinos at Griffin Park on Saturday.
The run began with four goals in that game against Halifax, followed by six from six at Warrington, five at Wakefield and three at home to Widnes. "To be honest I hadn't really given it a whole lot of thought," Martin said. "I've just been practising really well and hitting them sweetly. "Don't get me wrong, a record like that would be something very special indeed. "I just hope the boys put on plenty of tries through the middle to help me out." |
