Gloucester confirm Paul switch
Paul (l) could play rugby union for England
Paul (l) could play rugby union for England
Henry Paul has been unveiled as a Gloucester player after one of the toughest decisions of his life.

The New Zealander will leave Bradford Bulls when his contract ends at the close of the season to take up a four-year deal, thought to be worth in the region of 200,000 a year, with Gloucester.

And Gloucester chairman Tom Walkinshaw revealed that the Kingsholm club funded the cross-code move without assistance from the Rugby Football Union.

"It was one of the hardest decisions of my life and was six months in the making, but I now know it's probably for the best.

"I was impressed by the honesty of the club and things behind the scenes. The attitude is similar to when I joined Bradford.

One thing that the Bulls could not offer was European rugby which was a big draw in Paul's move south.

"I think European football is really exciting and I want to be part of it. That's something that doesn't happen enough in rugby league and was a big pulling point."

The step beyond rugby on the European stage with Gloucester is international rugby, but Paul is taking everyhting one stage at a time.

"I've signed a deal with Gloucester and I have to prove myself there first," Paul said.

The 27-year-old qualifies to play for England through a grandparent and has been a reported long-time target of national coach Clive Woodward.

And with New Zealand refusing to select players who ply their trade outside the country Paul's international ambitions look limited to the red rose of his adopted country.

But he has not yet contemplated the prospect of representing either country and said: "I'll cross that hurdle when I get to it."

His brother Robbie, the Bulls captain, said he was disappointed to lose such an influential player, but believed Bradford could recover from the blow.

"From the point of view of a player and captain, it's pretty disappointing as it's good to have one of the best players in the world on your side," Robbie said.

"But we've got a good squad. We were a good team before Henry came and we'll be a good team when he leaves.

"As a brother, I wish him all the best. I know he has made the right decision for himself."
