England call up Kiwi star Paul
Henry Paul
Henry Paul: Controversial figure in England set-up
Former rugby league star Henry Paul has been named in the England squad for the union international against Australia next month.

But Iain Balshaw, Phil Greening and Simon Shaw have all paid the price for the shock defeat by Ireland a fortnight ago and have been left out by coach Clive Woodward.

Captain Martin Johnson once again misses out through injury - and Neil Back has been preferred to Matt Dawson as stand-in skipper.

Paul's call-up for the game at Twickenham on 10 November comes just five days after the New Zealand-born back made his debut in the union code.

The ex-Bradford Bulls player Paul qualifies for England through his grandparents.

But he has played just 80 minutes of union action since starting his new career with Gloucester last Saturday.

Woodward, though, does not expect Paul to start any of England's autumn Test matches against Australia, Rumania and South Africa.

Iain Balshaw reflects on the Dublin defeat
Balshaw: Axed

"Henry's involvement is part of a learning curve similar to that experienced by Jason Robinson last year," Woodward said.

Sale wing Robinson, who also made the switch from league, did not start an international for England until the Six Nations decider against Ireland a fortnight ago.

While the announcement of the squad comes as a huge boost to Paul, a number of more established union players have suddenly seen their international careers put on hold.

Bath and Lions full-back Balshaw, Wasps hooker Greening and lock Shaw have all been overlooked following the 20-14 defeat by Ireland, which cost England the Grand Slam.

And there is also no place for Leicester back-row man Martin Corry, who has been troubled in recent weeks by a hamstring problem.

Captain Johnson is still ruled out because of a hand injury.

His understudy in Dublin, scrum-half Dawson, is struggling with a hamstring injury - so Leicester flanker Back is named as skipper.

Woodward has drafted in a number of younger players - including fly-half Charlie Hodgson, hooker Steve Thompson and lock Ben Kay - but it is unlikely they will all be named in the match-day 22.

Backs: K Bracken, M Catt, B Cohen, M Dawson, W Greenwood, A Healey, C Hodgson, D Luger, H Paul, M Perry, J Robinson, J Wilkinson.

Forwards: N Back (capt), S Borthwick, D Grewcock, R Hill, B Kay, J Leonard, L Moody, M Regan, G Rowntree, S Thompson, P Vickery, D West, J White, J Worsley.
