Saints keep up pressure
Saints' Paul Sculthorpe
Paul Sculthorpe scored one try and kicked five goals
Wakefield 6-48 St Helens

St Helens kept pace with their title rivals with an emphatic nine-try demolition of Wakefield at Belle Vue this afternoon.

Saints were always in control from the moment Tim Jonkers ran in the fastest try in Super League history with just 14 seconds on the clock.

Ian Millward's side showed their struggling hosts little mercy as they thoroughly outclassed the Wildcats, who remain rooted to the foot of the table with Salford and Warrington.

The result was never in doubt with seven different Saints players getting on the scoresheet, Paul Sculthorpe leading the way with 16 points.

The visitors made a sensational start when Darren Albert recovered Sculthorpe's kick-off and returned the ball to his captain to send Jonkers over for a converted try.

Knott reduced the arrears when he landed a fourth-minute penalty but the Wildcats failed to contain Saints in a one-sided encounter.

Anthony Stewart extended the Saints lead after 10 minutes when he just managed to cling onto a pass from creator Paul Newlove to sprint clear down the touchline.

Frew almost pulled a try back after a jinking run on the sixth tackle, but Jonkers managed to recover to force the handover.

  Match facts
Wakefield 6: Tries: N. Law. Goals: Knott.

St Helens 48: Tries: Jonkers, Stewart, Stankevitch, Shiels, Hoppe 2, Cunningham, Sculthorpe, Nickle. Goals: Sculthorpe 5, Albert.

Saints were not out of sight by half-time but when John Stankevitch went in for a third try after 30 minutes the game was as good as over.

Stewart created the opening for the second row forward to go in under the posts after taking over a lightning Saints attack started by Gleeson.

In the second half Peter Shiels crossed for try number four after just 44 seconds.

Neil Law scored for Wakefield before Tommy Martyn's long pass sent Sean Hoppe over for Saints after 54 minutes.

Martyn then repeated the favour for the Kiwi to bag his second after Cunningham had come off the bench to force his way over for a try of his own.

Sculthorpe added another after Hoppe intercepted Brad Davis before Sonny Nickle showed rare finesse to sidestep his way in for the final try.

Sculthorpe's sixth goal wrapped up a good day's work for the visitors.
