| Tiger on the prowl Singh and Goosen are the big threats to Woods Tiger Woods had the round of the day and has put himself in a strong position to win his third Masters title. Tiger did everything exactly right. He was more aggressive off the tee on the back nine and got some birdies when it counted. It was a long day for Tiger after Friday's rain called an early halt to proceedings. He held it together for the remainder of his second round on Saturday morning and then came out again and played a superb 18 holes. It's a tribute to both his ability and his fitness.
Retief Goosen made a flying start with three birdies in his opening three holes and I think he will be a little disappointed to have finished with a 69 after that start. He has had three sub-70 rounds so far and nobody has ever carded all four rounds in the 60s at Augusta. I believe he will need to do that if he is to take the Green Jacket. Vijay Singh played his usual steady brand of golf, following up a bogey at 17 with a good par at 18 which he will be relieved with. He had found the water at the 15th which took the wind out of his sails somewhat. Lying two shots behind Woods and Goosen he knows he is up against it in the final round but still has a good chance, especially as a previous winner. I think that Mickelson, Garcia and Els on seven-under-par will need to shoot something like a 67 and rely on the top three making mistakes if they are to win.
Woods has to be favourite going into the final day having won the title twice already. But I have a lot of time for Goosen who is putting very well and it wouldn't surprise me if the South African went on to win. It may come down to whether he is overawed by both the presence of Woods and the whole Masters occasion. However he has a very calm and concentrated approach to the game. The only worry is that there is rain forecast for the area on Sunday which means that play is starting an hour earlier. The course is quite wet, especially for the spectators and it would be a shame if the rain spoiled the potential for a great final day's golf. |
